O-Pee-Chee is currently a hockey card brand owned by The Upper Deck Company. Upper Deck has been producing cards under this brand license since 2006. The brand is on the lower end of the products Upper Deck produces.
Originally, O-Pee-Chee was a gum company, having started in London, Ontario, Canada in the early 20th century. Their first foray into trading cards was in 1934, when they produced both baseball and hockey cards. In the late 1950’s they began a marketing agreement with The Topps Company to distribute sports and entertainment trading cards for the Canadian market. A short time later, they began printing the cards at their London facility, which they continued until the mid 1990s.
The Topps/O-Pee-Chee relationship lasted until 2004, with O-Pee-Chee creating cards that were very similar to the Topps sets produced in the United States, but with the French language as required by Canadian law. As a result, with some of these older sets, the O-Pee-Chee version of a card has a much lower print run, and is often more sought after than their Topps counterpart.
