Over the past few years, sports card collecting has experienced a bit of a renaissance. It’s not quite to the levels of the boom in the late 80’s and early 90’s, but it has definitely taken off since 2019. There are several theories on why that’s the case, and we will examine some of those down the road. For now, let’s just take a look at some things to consider if you’re just getting started (or starting over) with card collecting.
Figure Out What You Like
There are so many options now for collecting, that you should narrow your focus prior to diving in. Most people don’t have unlimited funds, so it’s impossible to collect everything. Do you have a favorite player or team you want to focus on? Do you want to build sets? Does a particular product catch your eye? Do you prefer modern or vintage cards? These are some questions you’ll have to ask yourself before deciding what to start buying.
Get Plugged In
Find a group to connect with to talk cards and share and continue to learn the ins and outs of the hobby. Depending on where you feel most comfortable, this could be attending a trade night at a Local Card Shop, or joining a Facebook group dedicated to your area or focus of your collection.
Use Protection
This is a great tip for many aspects of the hobby. Protect your investment appropriately, by storing and/or displaying cards in penny sleeves, top loaders and one-touches based on their value (or just their value to you). Grade your cards and have them put in protective slabs that way, if you wish. If you’re buying or selling, deal with people and marketplaces you trust, and protect yourself by using payment methods that protect you, and always ask for (and follow up with) people vouching for someone you’re going to deal with.
Only Spend What You Can Afford
This is a big one. I often see comments on sales, asking if they can wait to pay until their next pay day. If you don’t have the funds available at the time, don’t bid on or buy cards. This isn’t good for yourself or anyone. Ripping packs and buying into breaks can be a fun and exciting experience, but don’t chase a hit when you can’t really afford to be. Take care of what’s most important first.
Have Fun
Anything that you dedicate your free time and money towards, should bring you some level of happiness. Have a good time collecting what you want, and how you want, and encourage others to do the same for themselves. Don’t be afraid to show off something you’re excited to acquire. Enjoy yourself!
